Pakistan Pictures - pakistani culture pics

PART I
Having sorted through hundreds of pictures, (most of them taken myself, others on line) I have finally attempted to capture the 'essence' of Pakistan after my recent trip there.....one I shall never forget....
Yes, I went there looking for the effects of war, but found instead a vibrant culture fighting for survival! Refusing to bow down to any invasion...or give in to it...
This hub is not a political statement...nor a commercial one...(I'm no professional photographer either!). I have for this reason, deliberately left out the 'modern' side of pakistan in part 1, as I wanted it to be a simple tribute to the common man on the street....the work he does.... interspersed with little details you won't find in any tourist guide book....
I'm starting with these elderly people I found sitting by their shops.....
All have the same quality of grace and humility that I found so inspiring. Despite their faded clothes, they held themselves high with dignity. Truly humbling....
FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SHOPS AND VENDORS
These shops are a wonder to behold! Most have wicker baskets displayed in the open, with fresh carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers and other exotic vegetables meticulously piled in rows, as are ripe bananas, sweet smelling mangoes, oranges and guavas.
Water is sprayed regularly to keep them looking fresh throughout the hot day! Fresh juice is one of the delights of this region.... and I've yet to taste a more refreshing drink!
FLOWER MAKING & DECORATIONS
Flower shops are another fascinating sight... and I wish I could capture the true beauty and scent of eastern flowers. Roses, marigold and chameli (jasmine) petals are traditionally used for making garlands and bracelets often worn by women. These flower makers spend hours threading each petal together...a real skill, in my eyes.
Wedding ceremonies are elaborate and so are the decorations for them. Flowers aswell as tinsel baskets and paper streamers are used for decoration. Elaborate trays are used to carry gifts and decorate at ceremonies....
BAZAARS
And now to my favorite part: the bazaars of lahore! One is almost overwhelmed by the profusion of brilliant colors, smells and sounds. Little tiny streets overflowing with people, shop keepers frantically vying for attention, bargains being made, it's one warm colorful experience! These pictures are right from the heart of one such bazaar...
It's remarkable to see the skill and dedication with which these people work...
This boy I found at a shop for braids and ribbons, used for stitching on saris and dresses. His family had little money to pay for his education, so he was learning the art of braid making instead....
Pashmina and embroidery shawls....all hand made!
A local Music shop. Instruments were constructed right inside that very shop! I loved it...
Lastly, I just want to include these three boys who especially posed for a picture. In them, hope and the will to live shines through.... their smiles warm my heart even today.

Beautiful and so colorful. thanks for sharing.
oh wow, these pictures are great! If you're not a professional photographer, what am I then? LOL. But really, I can just imagine you looking beyond your lens trying to capture the essence of Pakistan, what we basically don't see in our TVs. Thanks for sharing these MOW.
These pics were great and it shows how that the human spirit is alive and well. The elders carry a burden that shows in their faces but like you said, dignity does show through. The shops are great and projects so much pride. Great hub!
Hey, myownworld, this is another great hub from you! I loved the way you have carefully selected the pictures to give us such a good taste of Lahore not to mention your thought-provoking, sensitive and vivid comments. It literally felt as i was walking through the streets of Lahore again, taking in the sights, sounds, the smell of the air... you really transported me to a different world. Many thanks for sharing!
Fantastic photos - they are truly gifted people. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for this hub. I like to see pictures of the daily life in Pakistan. Some of these shops in Lahore look familiar to me. I also bought many pashminas when I was in Lahore and also some traditional shoes in Anarkali. 250 rupees per pair. I also saw men in the street making clothes and dying the cloth.
If you have more pictures of the ordinary people please make another hub.
This is a beautiful hub, just when I thought your hubs couldn't get any better you suprise me again! :) It seems such a bright and colourful place, not how I expected it. The fruit is displayed so carefully and neatly I really want to try some of that juice too! I see what you mean about the boys expression in the picture at the begining, it moves me also but I can't explain why :s the sari's dresses and shoes are soooooo beautiful, I must visit Pakistan one day. Thanks for sharing another great hub Myownworld! :) love the last picture
MOW, I was very happy to see this side of Pakistan through your [very artistic] eyes. It's always exciting to see how other countries/cultures live, and especially great to see the normal every day life in a country that has seen so much war and pain.
I'm sure you took many more pictures than this, and I agree - it is certainly worth posting another hub.
Once again - fabulous job!
What a terrific hub! I enjoyed the colorful pictures so much, and the descriptions of the talented craftsmanship that went into creating, especially the cloth and clothing.
Was just re-reading your hub. It brings back good memories. I can hear the sound of the traffic, the pop pop sound of the rickshaws, the honking horns, the heat. Though I did notice on my last visit that the polution was not as bad as the first time. The air used to be blue. It reminds me too of riding a Qingqi, only once, I sat at the back and was holding on for dear life as we raced through the traffic and everyone turning round to see the foreigner with a very red face from the heat. I never go brown, only red. I have seen women with babies sitting on these vehicles and not holding on at all. I was terrified of falling off. I am certainly looking forward to seeing more photos.
Best regards
MOW my god what a beautiful hub, wish I was there right now. Really well put together,I want to be like you when I grow up. Please ! Miss you, Kimberly
Beautiful hub. The photos are amazing...thanks so much for posting them.
MYO as usual your hub is right up there at the platinum standard. Thank you for the window into another culture I know nothing about ! Marvelous work. You rock my friend.
The colorful pictures tell the story of a vibrant culture of people so much better than words could have done. This is an outstanding hub. Thanks.
Picture say a thousand words. My goodness- you've said quite a bit here. Thank you very much. This is incredible work.
myownworld - Truly Amazing, A picture is worth a million words. You have managed to capture the essence of Pakistan through your pictures. My heart was touched through each and every picture. I loved the colors, the vibrancy. I never realized that such beauty existed in a country where war is so predominant. Thank you for showing us the other side of Pakistan.
The faces of the old and the young. Your caption, "A story in each face." Your ability to see what lies beneath the surface of the three young boys is insightful. How truly gifted you are. Thanks so much for sharing.
Amazingly beautiful,
Sage
myownworld - as I scrolled down the page I was so amazed at the colors . . and the way these items are laid out. I could almost taste the fruits and feel the softness of the fabrics. What a wonderful way for you to share your thoughts and your photos of life in such a far a way land. Thanks for taking me to Pakistan today. I dont think I will forget my (your) trip !
Great stuff again MOW. Just shows that whatever the media says, ordinary people are just living their lives as best they can.
Yer hubs are so touching and just unforgetable, tis my honor that yer first hub not serious is to interview me, you have no idea how much that means to me, I used to have this saying that I used but havent used it for years but for you I can use it.
To know you, is to love you ! x
you ARE a photographer
my mother in law recently visited Italy, and the pictures she took of the elderly beggar woman broke my heart....
This world is old, and life is hard all around.
Yes I do encourage new hubbers and always will but you will always hold a special place in my heart, I like to think we are the sort of friends that just know we are always there for each other. Btw you can ask me anything, get personal, call yer hub an interview with BadCompany Uncut lol, go for it and ask wat you think others wud ask because truth be told I wouldnt let anyone else interview me !
Oh MOW you have brought us a more colorful, happier, more personal, clearer, and more alive Pakistan than I have imagined. I love those beautiful colors of thread and cloth and vegetables....and I want a cane smoothie. =:) Great, amazing photos! Thank you for the tour.
Hey MOW, I miss Asia and your pics speak a thousand words, arent they ordinary people but they are truly dignified, I love everything about the pictures and images ---
fruit stands, flowers, the dresses -- I have one of that, I found it here at Asian store, I just love it (I love Asian type of jewelries LOL)
Most of all I see people who are hardworking and have dignity!!
I agree with the boys eyes, it captured my attention and the memories of Pakistan in your last hubs, those eyes, it evoke feelings and all --
And the smiles of the three boys, hmm they are what we should live for -- children--
Thank you MOW,
Cheers my friend, Maita
I have looked at your hub several times because I like the pictures. I have seen the one of the vegetable cart. Did you take that near the Fort? The background looks the same as my chick pea sellers that I took outside the Fort in November 2008.
I have read the comments by the other hubbers and you deserve all the praise. Well done.
Hy myownworld: What a wonderous Hub this is. There are colours and flavours here that just shine. Pakistan is alive and brimming with life and you can read it and see it for yourself in these amazing pictures! Nothing like the dour dull media stories and images we are so used to having thrown at us. As usual, you are unique, because you balance everything by giving us all a reality check. These people are the true Pakistan, the ordinary people of this country. Yet, there is the youth and the future of this country also. The toxic pours into Pakistan from the Foreign media, and tries to drive people away. This hub makes me want to go and visit this country. That's the difference you make!
You are so good at bringing it all together, and as usual, you have made a great hub! MOW, you are one of my favourite hubbers, and this just proves why! Ya get a bug hug from me for that! x : )
Hi,
Lovely pics, reminds me of each time I go to visit!
Zaheer
hey MOW,you have put the pictures togather so nicely, the pictures from the duppatah gali of liberty reminds me of the head ach that my tailor used to give me:)but i miss roaming around there in rush!!
great effort,best regards,Nadia
I live in Pakistan I am seeing the vanishing pakistan. The plunderers and looters are ruling the country. Psuedo slogans and non-issues are testing the patience of everage pakistanis. I believe in Miracles and only a miracle can put a hault to the degredation of the land of pure as they call it.
Gorgeous photos! They reminded me of India - I've taken two trips there. You have inspired me to get out my old photos and get them scanned so I can post them. Beautiful hub - thank you!!
No matter where you go in Asia you'll find one thing common i.e. Political Banner ads in every street. Ads behind that boy in 5th pic reminded me of this fact. And i hate those bazaars(and small street hawker zones) for the crowd and bargain fights, but that's Asia for you. Nice hub mow :)
Your feeling are so sympathizingly about Pakistan and that's why these feelings are looking in your pictures. Hope so, you would share more such kind of pictures in future.
Thanks and thubs up
Shane
Beautiful pictures. I especially love the shops so full of colors. I can't wait to see more.
I was feeling down, so came for another read, the bright colours and hopeful smiles cheered me up! :) Thanks Myownworld, hope you're good!
Beautiful photos of the ordinary Pakistani people - wonderful hub...
Amazing perspective on a country that may otherwise be receiving negative publicity due to the media. Awesome pictures, love the bazaars!
Thanks for your comments. Years don't count in the life of a nation. Your wonderful way of exposing pakistan has put a new ray of hope in my sad brain. I genuinely feel that if people of pakistan decide to take control of Pakistan nobody can stop this Asian country from becoming new Asian Tiger...
I feel so real reading the natural beauty of life. The media sometimes hype issues. I believe in the hidden treasures deposited in man. Thanks for sharing these lots. Thank you.
Great pictures, you really captured their culture well.
It's true that if you live in a place you don't see it the same as visitors do. You take it for granted.
Myownworld, I have linked your hub to mine.
Lovely glimpses into a part of the world I have never seen yet I seem to know it. I guess from the many people of Indian and Pakistani origin we have here in South Africa. I love going to the Oriental Bazaar in Johannesburg where there are many shops like those you have photographed here.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful pix.
Love and peace
Tony
Wow just wow, MOW; lol that just rhymed. However on a serious note nobody could have ever captured the beauty and life like you have done here. I can relate to so many things and snaps in your hub be it vibrant colors, the bazaars, the chai or the sugarcane juice. The pics are a delight to watch and so is the flow of the hub. Thanks for sharing. It has inspired me to write a hub on something I was thinking for a while, should get my camera to work.
Thank you so ardently for this hub - all the beautiful picture of the reality you saw, the information of truth you gave. Just a wonderful reading here. Much appreciation for sharing your words and pictures. Hope there is another coming too!
I've been meaning to come over here and read this hub, myownworld. I think you did an excellent job of capturing the essence of the Pakistan here, especially of the bazaars and accompanied each photos with brief yet information descriptions. Thanks so much for sharing this! Wonderful work as always.
Dohn
Awesome pictures. I always pictured Pakistan as more "dusty", but all your pictures are very colorful! I hope to visit there someday!
Next time you go to Pakistan, I recommend you to visit Northern Mountain areas in Pakistan too, I found them a heaven on earth.
Just posted a new hub on Lake Saif-ul-muluk after your hub pop ups again. Thank you for inspiring me on sharing my own trip too. Thank you
myownworld!
you are doing Great....all these photos are depicting the true scene in Pakistan, from one level to another.i got this link from Fb.
keep it up!!
Beautiful pictures of a beautiful place. Maybe one day I'll get the opportunity to visit, but until then, thanks for sharing, great hub.
And that's one crazy looking juice machine. =)
Can't believe that I missed this one - a fantastic Hub with wonderful images. You captured the colours and life of Pakistan beautifully.
Due to a childhood spent watching the likes of Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, Pakistan is a place I have always wanted to visit. After seeing your photos, even more so.
I hope that you remember us when you start working for the National Geographic :D
We are not often showed the vibrant 'real' pakistan, however this hub shows just how colourful it is there. Great hub and wonderful pictures. Hope theres more to come.
OMG!!! From all the many stories I have heard from my father and relatives you have captured the very heart and essence of Pakistan...Now I want to go 10x more!!!!! A wonderful hub and absolutely beautiful photography, MOW!!!!!!!!!! I loooove it!
MOW, you have truly had an experience that will last a lifetime. It is always sad to see in the midst of all wars and or fights there are those that just want peace and life.
Awesome colors, beautiful wares, I would have felt like a kid in the candy store (wanting to buy one of everything to take home). Hopefully one day everyone will just decide to seek peace and the tranquility that it brings, for that is the true wealth of life.
All will be with ya by this time Sunday night, enjoy yer Saturday night x
Such vibrancy MOW. The pictures too. much love, CC great hub as usual
Oh! this was a wonderful representation of Pakistan, so vibrant and interesting. Thanks for sharing it!
Thank you for sharing the World of Pakistan , the pictures were brilliant, I loved the dresses and shoes. The fruits and vegetables were so colorful and the little boys faces touched my soul. I also pray for the women of Pakistan because they still have a long way to go. I am looking forward to this series. :)
Myownworld, What a beautiful presentation! You have captured the many artistic and creative ways that the people of Pakistan make a living! The fashions are beautiful as well! Wonderful photographs! This is like a photo documentary; Great job!

Guess who? Loved the pictures when i saw you take them in Pakistan and love them even more now ,after so much time has elapsed. So proud of you for doing what you've always believed in.
Amazing and beautiful photos! Thank you so much for the glance at a culture different from my own. Absolutely remarkable! I love this Hub!
Very good.
These are vivid and colorful photos. Everything looks so good. I have never been there, but I have been to the Philippines and have seen how hard people work to make a living. It's too bad that when politicians have disputes, they don't put on the gloves and settle it themselves, instead of sending armies and feeding us propaganda about the hard working people in the world. Beautiful hub.
Great pics it shows that still people living outside Pakistan know about the brighter side of Pakistan or the actual culture of Pakistan which is so rich, vibrant and full of fun. I love my Pakistan but feel guilt while seeing the dead bodies of people in terrorist activities. somewhere in my heart there is a guilt that we too are responsible for it because we are doing nothing to uplift our image or to stop destruction.
Thanks for uploading them:)
The true colors of Pakistan...isn't it?
thanks myownworld for sharing the beautiful places of pakistan
Love their marketplace. Especially the fabrics and threads and jewelery.
Reading a book once I learned pachy meant thick, like thick skin (pachyderm), thick grasses (pachysandra), and the name Pakistan meant (thick something). But I just can't recall why it is called Pachystan? Do you know what the country name means?
Great Pictures, I really like the fruit displays, they look great and make me hungry :)
it took me so long to scroll down to the bottom of this screen that they have just changed the technology on my camera - but I finally made it here to thank you for your beautiful eyes - the pair that gave us these life-affirming pictures...
Truly wonderful words spoken about a very colorful country, you show it in your pictures. A travelogue and adventure. Vibrant colors, foods, cloth, seeds, people, wow I am enthralled by the content, job well done and thanks for the share. Rate it a BIG UP
ty my sister for giving me such an amazing glimpse into this culture and it's ppl... Thru the media they paint pakistan as a place where terrroists thrive smh it's great to see someone celebrating these wonderful people and their way of life.. as usual a rate up for sure. You have a great eye for the beautiful things in this world ~hugs~
Reminds me of Egypt for some reason, anyways great picture, love the colors =)
Im sure you will luv it =)
MOW, you amaze me with your skills. I am looking forward to reading more.
So very colorful! What a rich (not meant as 'wealthy') culture! When I visited the Philippines a few years ago I was impressed by the resiliancy of the people in tough circumstances. This is a beautiful hub. Thank you for sharing!

I visited Pakistan in 1997 and up till today, the Pakistan i carry in my heart is not the Pakistan they tell us about in the media, the Pakistan i have in the deepest depth of my sincere heart is illustrated in all the pictures above.Still miss the cane juice and the daily Chai.
Hey! u brought smiles in my face for the first time since i began reading stuffs here in hubpages.
